Program Description
"'Beyond the Flood' is a 60 minute telethon jointly produced by Minneapolis-St. Paul television stations and simulcast on all participating stations (7 total). This program brought all Twin Cities TV anchors together in one studio for the first time in history to host a fundraising event. 'Beyond the Flood' is an unprecedented effort to marshal the collective resources of Twin Cities television broadcasters to not only report on recovery efforts through live satellite reports from flood-affected areas but also create a mechanism for public contributions. During the broadcast, over $500 thousand was raised. Contributions to the flood relief fund continued for months following the broadcast. In June, Twin Cities television stations came together again to produce a home video chronicling the disaster, entitled 'The Flood of '97: The People, Their Stories.' 20,000 units were produced and sold out within a few weeks. Distributed by Target stores, all proceeds went to flood relief. Today, over $800,000 has been raised between the telethon, video and contributions to the established fund."--1997 Peabody Awards entry form.
