- Episode Description
- "THE ANDERSON FILE: THE LOUISIANA CONNECTION is the story of how a [Louisiana-based] husband and wife team built an international organization to help save the lives of 12,000 Miskito Indian refugees in Honduras. The Miskito Indians fled the fighting in their native Nicaragua only to find starvation and desperation in neighboring Honduras. Only through the efforts of Diane and Woody Jenkins of Louisiana have these 12,000 refugees survived. These first pictures of their work in the jungle tell their heroic story. The program concludes with a citation for their work by the President of the United States."--1985 Peabody Awards entry form. The program tells the story of Miskito Indian refugees fleeing violence in Nicaragua, now living in Honduras. It interviews several of these refugees, who tell of the horrors they experienced. A Louisiana couple formed an aid organization called Friends of the Americas, initially sending food to the starving Miskito refugees, then expanding their aid to include medicine and education on survival, and a school for the children. The program interviews the couple and other aid workers about the work they do. The American ambassador to Honduras is interviewed. Another program from Friends of the Americas is "Shoebox for Humanity," which sends care packages to refugees. The only pilot who flies in and out of the refugee camp is interviewed, and an official from the U.S. Office of Refugee Affairs and several senators praise the work the Jenkins organization is doing and discuss the political situation in the region. The program covers other refugee camps organized by the U.N. and interviews a refugee who recounts the torture she experienced in Nicaragua. The program concludes with President Reagan recognizing Diane and Woody Jenkins and Friends of the Americas with a humanitarian award and an interview with Diane Jenkins.
