Program Description
"This documentary examines the flow of nearly 20 million gallons of raw sewage every day from Tijuana, Mexico into San Diego, California. Through interviews with public officials, politicians, and most importantly those living along the border, the program established the history and current situation; its human impact; and the efforts now being made to resolve it. While this 50 year-old problem has been extensively covered in the local media, the attitude has tended to be one of 'look at what Mexico is doing to us.' By taking our cameras into the areas of Tijuana where sewage flows openly through the streets, and documenting the affect on the area residents, the program establishes that those living on both sides of the border are united by this problem. It is not a matter of placing blame, but of realizing that the problem exists, & that we must work together to solve it. Interviews with officials are interwoven with interviews with area residents to give the viewer both solid information, and a feeling of the emotional impact of the sewage flows. Throughout the program, powerful images are then used to constantly remind the viewer of the affect this problem is having on human lives."--1984 Peabody Awards entry form.
