Program Description
"Program profiles San Diego County families and individuals impacted by the region's faltering economy due to the reduction of defense industry jobs and the closing of local large corporations. "The program examines the effect downsizing is having on the local economy where San Diego County is becoming a community of rich and poor, and little in between. The jobs being created are mainly low paying service positions. The documentary takes a discerning look at the situation in San Diego - past, present and future. "'Downsizing the Dream' merits Peabody consideration because the program takes an in-depth look at the negative effect of economic change on San Diego County residents. The program gives historic perspective by showing how the military once provided great growth potential to the region which is now faltering due to defense cutbacks. In addition, the human side of the issue is revealed as individuals from diverse economic backgrounds describe how the change in San Diego's economy has affected them and their families."--1996 Peabody Awards entry form.
