- Program Description
- "OPB On Behalf of Children IMMUNIZE NOW! was a month long, statewide public service campaign to alert the public to what Oregon's health officials say was a health care crisis in the making. Prior to this campaign less than half of all Oregon preschoolers had been immunized and, as a spokesperson for the Oregon Health Division told us, 'Children who aren't vaccinated are at a greater risk when a disease is introduced into the community. The vaccine-preventable diseases are extremely contagious and many of them are more serious for younger children.' "What made our campaign so unique is that we didn't just show the need'OPB worked with over 100 health care organizations and more than 3,000 volunteers in setting up free immunization clinics around the state. As a result, over 8,000 children received more than 18,000 free shots. "In order to reach everyone, we ran the campaign on OPB's radio and TV, printed over half-a-million flyers in nine languages, bought radio and print ads around the state, had the message printed on 100,000 Burgerville placemats and Safeway shopping bags, and worked with local newspapers on over 100 articles. OPB also bought air time on all commercial radio stations around the state and advertised in all daily newspapers."--1994 Peabody Awards entry form. This program features Steve Amen and Claudia Brown reporting. Volunteers and healthcare workers/experts, such as Sandy Mowrer, Julie Coffee, Donna Clark, Maynard Orme, Robert Boyd, Pat Crozier, Gail Woods, David Fleming, Harold Osterud, and Dr. Frank McCullar, are interviewed. Jennifer Peterson discusses her daughter Rachel, who died at the age of 6 from HIB, and other parents also urge viewers to consider immunizing their children on behalf of their own children and the children around them. Polio survivors discuss their experiences as well. Sound bites from Fred Rogers, Shari Lewis, and Barbara Roberts are featured.
