Series Description
"A Moment of Science' is a series of two-minute radio programs designed to entertain and educate its listeners five days a week with simple explanations of the science behind common but intriguing phenomena, such as why hot water pipes freeze first, or why you sometimes feel chilled when you are sunburned. The programs have been distributed nationally since 1988, and are also carried by the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. "The intent of A Moment of Science' is to help people understand the relationship of science to their daily lives. Listeners tell us they appreciate the way the programs focus on day-to-day science topics and how they affect them. Teachers request copies of programs to supplement their class materials, and students ask for the transcripts for use in school science projects. "A Moment of Science' provides daily bits of informal science education aimed at stimulating the scientific interest of older children and adults by showing them that science can indeed be inviting, entertaining, and captivating. The programs help the listener to be more equipped to understand, evaluate, and appreciate the world of science. As the adults become fascinated by science in their lives, they are motivated to support young people's interest, and to participate with them in their scientific recreational and educational activities."--1993 Peabody Awards entry form.
