Description
Program Description
"This hour-long program documents a watershed moment in the history of American popular culture when the first teen-focused television program, American Bandstand and its 'Regular' dancers, captured the attention of post World War II America. Utilizing the voices and images of ordinary, middle-class kids the program created a new and powerful market segment, the 'teenager.' Overnight, Philadelphia area high school students dancing on American Bandstand became major celebrities. These teenage 'stars' were responsible for shaping styles, attitudes and even values of millions of viewers across the country? until their sudden plunge into obscurity upon leaving the show when they turned eighteen. "We feel that Bandstand Days is worthy of a Peabody Award in the Documentary category because it recognizes and documents the contributions of an important segment of American population heretofore unrecognized, and a pivotal moment in the evolution of American popular culture. This program is the first documentary treatment to thoughtfully examine the experience of ordinary young people who were thrown before the public eye, forever establishing the power of the 'teenager' to command mass media and market attention. Thorough research and human-focused interviewing techniques reveal, first person, the dynamics behind the American Bandstand phenomenon."--1997 Peabody Awards entry form.
