Besides, with Ray Junior startin' school, I am not gonna have <v Mother>time to braid 'em every morning. <v Mother>Where is she? It's not like her to go off like this without telling me where she's goin'. <v Estelle>Well didn't she know she had a beauty parlor appointment? <v Mother>I've been telling her for two weeks. <v Estelle>I am gonna be so embarrassed if we don't keep this appointment. <v Mother>Well, let me check outside again. Everything in it's gonna be old news by the time we read it, innit <v Uncle Dudley>that right? [men laugh]. <v Ray>Look uh, can I talk to you for a second? <v Uncle Dudley>Yeah, sure. <v Man 2>We've got to go. <v Uncle Dudley>We'll see y'all, don't get in trouble now. <v Ray>How'd everything go at the ballgame? <v Uncle Dudley>Great. Now, what have you done? <v Mother 2>That's what you get for playing rope with boys. <v Mother 2>I'd be ashamed of myself actin' like that. <v Mother 2>[Kathy: You're gettin' it on your hanky] it's all right. Just hold your head back 'til it stops. <v Mother 2>And go on home now. Get in your room you're not playing outside again today! You may not even play outside next week! <v Mother>She's determined not to get a permanent in her hair, and I'm determined she is. <v Girl 1>Why don't you give her a ?inaudible?. <v Estelle>Now, that's a good idea. <v Estelle>Sarah Anne, have you seen Kathy? <v Sarah Anne>No, ma'am. <v Girl 1>Sarah Anne, I'm coming to your birthday party tomorrow. <v Sarah Anne>I know it. <v Mother>[sighs] Sarah Anne Phillips is having a birthday party tomorrow? <v Estelle>Yes. And that reminds me, I haven't bought her a present yet.
<v Estelle>We'll have to go by Henrietta's and tell her what happened. <v Estelle>Then we'll go to the drugstore and we'll get their school supplies and presents for Sarah <v Estelle>Anne, then I'll take y'all home. <v Estelle>Kathy is going to the birthday party too isn't she? <v Mother>Maybe Mrs. Phillips invited her and she forgot to tell me. <v Mother>[music plays] <v Mother>Kathleen! [music playing] [hammering] <v Kathy>Daddy, what're you doin'? <v Ray>Well uh, this board here was loose and I- afraid

They're sissy! <v Ray>Oh, you couldn't be sissy.
<v Ray>I don't care what they did to your hair. <v Ray>Sissies are coward. <v Ray>You're as brave as anybody I know. <v Kathy>I don't wanna be a girl. <v Kathy>Girls don't have any fun. <v Ray>[birds chirping] Well, you know it's not uh, not always easy <v Ray>being a boy either. <v Ray>We all gotta do things that uh we don't wanna do sometime. <v Ray>What's really important, sweetie, is <v Ray>uh is what's deep, deep, deep down inside of you, way down inside uh you. <v Ray>Nobody can ever take that away from you, ever. <v Ray>I don't care what they do to your hair, I don't care if they shave your head.

<v Jane Brody>You know, almost every family has one picky eater. <v Jane Brody>There's Susie who won't touch anything green. <v Jane Brody>Jeffrey who refuses to drink milk. <v Jane Brody>And Uncle George, who, after 50 years of eating, has yet to touch a salad. <v Jane Brody>At your house, it could be 15 year old Amy who's never up in time to do her makeup <v Jane Brody>and eat breakfast before school, or 16 year old Michael, whose diet <v Jane Brody>consists of fatty fast foods from the nearest drive-in. <v Jane Brody>What about your next door neighbor? That young professional who starts the day with a cup <v Jane Brody>of coffee and ends it with a gourmet frozen dinner? <v Jane Brody>Our question is, are any of these eaters getting their fair share of micronutrients? <v Jane Brody>What are micronutrients? Description
Program Description
"SUMMER'S END, co-produced by Arkansas Educational Television and American Film Institute Fellow Beth Brickell, is the bittersweet story of a tomboy growing up in small town America in the 1940s. The story speaks to everyone who has ever experienced the painful transition from childhood to adolescence, and to young people everywhere who face questions about their own place in the world. "Filmed on location in two small towns in Arkansas which were transformed to a 1948 setting for this production, SUMMER'S END captures the nostalgic atmosphere of small town America in a more innocent time. "As the film's heroine, Kathy, asserts her individuality, she revels in being considered a 'tomboy.' In that time of rigid social roles, she is the only girl playing on the softball team and being 'one of the boys.' Her embarrassed mother (played by Radha Delamarter), wants to cut Kathy's pigtails, perm her hair, and turn her into a 'proper little girl.' Her unconventional father (played by Bill Vint) taught her to play baseball, helped her build a clubhouse, and encouraged her individuality, much to the chagrin of his wife. "This beautifully reminiscent film captures the heart of small town America, yet it transcends both time and place. Filmed in Arkansas, SUMMER'S END features local residents in all but four of the 26 roles in the picture, and features the dramatic debut of 11-year-old Jennifer Miller of Emerson, Arkansas, as Kathy."--1986 Peabody Awards entry form.
