- Program Description
- "'A Pearl Harbor Remembrance' is a six-hour documentary featuring a radio recreation of December 7, 1941 as it was experienced by the millions of people on the home from who learned of the events through the radio. This was achieved through the use of numerous actual radio broadcasts of the day, eyewitness accounts and emotional personal recollections. "The broadcast begins at noon as a typical Sunday 1940s radio program complete with the music, news and commercials of the time. Then, at 12:55pm EST, the hour of the Japanese attack on Oahu, the listener is transported to Hawaii for eyewitness accounts of the bombing. In the remaining five hours of the program we hear a mix of: present-day analyses by 12 experts; oral histories gathered from more than 20 people who vividly remember where they were on December 7, 1941; actual radio bulletins and broadcasts; major speeches in their entirety; and the music and dramatic programs of the period. "Racism on both sides -- an underlying factor in the Pearl Harbor attack -- is dealt with throughout the program and in a more concentrated fashion in the last hour, which included a 25-minute documentary on the internment of Japanese Americans. "Our goal was to make the day come to life for people who never experienced Pearl Harbor, and allow those who remember the day to share their thoughts. We received an enthusiastic response to 'A Pearl Harbor Remembrance.' More than 300 calls came in to our telephone response line on the day of the broadcast and during a subsequent three-part rebroadcast. A Philadelphia Inquirer editorial said that of the scores of specials commemorating the Pearl Harbor anniversary, 'A Pearl Harbor Remembrance was 'the one program that most vividly brought back the memories of that era.'"--1991 Peabody Awards entry form. In the first portion, WHYY's John Paul Weber and John Roberts read 1941 news announcements and 1940's radio programs, music, and advertisements are heard.
