<v TV Host>This program was made possible by this station and other public television stations. <v TV Host>Additional funding from Avon Products Incorporated and it's over 1 million <v TV Host>representatives throughout the world. <v Speaker>[music plays] <v Host>Long, long ago, in a faraway land, a wicked goblin invented
<v Host>a magic mirror and hung it high above the world. <v Host>Everything reflected in this mirror looked ugly. <v Host>Even beautiful countryside looked like boiled cabbage. <v Host>The goblin looked into the mirror and laughed with glee at all the ugliness he saw. <v Host>One day, the mirror fell and shattered into a million pieces. <v Host>Some of the pieces were no bigger than tiny grains of sand and <v Host>they flew all over the world. <v Host>And where ever they fell, ugliness and discontent sprang up. <v Host>One such particle fell into the eye of Eric, the hero of our story, <v Host>and worked its way into his heart where the seed of discontent was planted, <v Host>making him curious about what might lie beyond the village and <v Host>about the mysterious snow queen who has the power to entrance any man <v Host>who looks into her eyes. <v Host>Our story starts at a village fair where we first meet our young lovers
<v Host>before the north wind blows, bringing with it the evil snow queen. <v Speaker>[music plays]

Description
Program Description
"Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, choreographed on ice by John Curry and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux (N.Y. City Ballet), as a skating ballet. Olympic gold medalist John Curry co-stars with other Olympic medalists Janet Lynn, Toller Cranston, Dorothy Hamill and Sandra Bezic. Other cast members are all international award winners (Patricia Dodd, [5-time] British champion) JoJo Starbuck, 3 times U.S. Pairs champion. This is a fully costumed and staged ice-ballet with elaborate sets, and in addition to fully realized 'real' sets, the work makes use of television special effects for the fantasy scenes. The music is by Glazounov, Rimsky-Korsakoff, Liadov and Moussorgsky. "(The program was awarded a special Jury Award from the San Francisco Film Festival, as well as an Emmy Nomination in Children's Programming from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.)"--1983 Peabody Awards entry form.
