Description
Series Description
"Struggle for Democracy, a 10 episode series, hosted by Patrick Watson, is a television essay on democracy--past, present and future. Some of the episodes include: "'Genesis' travels to Athens, Greece where the ideal of democracy burst forth and then disappeared. Watson looks at how the democratic impulse that exists consensually in small societies can be transformed into a political form of government. "'Chiefs and Strongmen' travels up river in Nigeria with a tribal chief who will take his place on the council that advises the king. This system appears to be a democracy, but in a system based on chiefs there will always be a reliance on a 'Strong man.' Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi tells Watson that in his country, even though there are no political parties--or even a government--there is still democracy. "'Rule of Law' traces the origins of law in ancient Athens and at the Althing in Iceland - the site of [the] world's first parliament. "The Struggle for Democracy merits Peabody consideration because of its in-depth study of democracy in an historical context. [Traveling] to over 30 countries, the series yields some powerful scenes and memorable discoveries about the nature of democracy. The program attempts to understand the evolution of democracy, to explore its more troubling questions and to determine its future as a viable system of government."--1989 Peabody Awards entry form.
