Description
Episode Description
"People who make a living taking food from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico claim they are in serious trouble. They are threatened by increased fuel prices, competition from foreign fishing fleets, and a smaller catch. "They complain of stifling government regulations, resulting from the low priority fisheries get from federal policy makers. "The problems of overdevelopment and pollution in the coastal wetlands [are] [well-documented], and the program points to the ultimate impact on producer and consumer. "Social issues cloud the picture as Indochinese refugees enter the fishing industry, a situation which has led to resentment and violence. "The story unfolds largely through the unrehearsed words of the principals involved: The Governor of Texas, the fishermen, the processing plant owners and workers, the scientists who evaluate environmental impact on water and the wetlands. "The program is aimed at a general adult audience interested in economic or environmental issues surrounding the national fishery."--1981 Peabody Awards entry form. A program about the fishing industry, in particular those that fish off the Gulf of Mexico. Fishermen, the governor of Texas, processing plant owners and workers and scientists all discuss the problems the fishing industry faces, problems that stem from government regulations, foreign fishers such as Vietnamese refugees, and environmental factors.
