- "Purpose of program: To enable the preadolescent to understand the physical and social consequences of drug use/non-use; to explore the roles of peer pressure in their community and how it affects them on their use/non-use of drugs and to increase confidence levels that enable them to lead healthy, productive lives."Description: 'STRAIGHT UP' is a television series on drug prevention for ages 9-12. It consists of three 30-minute programs and is also available on videocassette in six 15-minutes parts designed to encourage viewer participation and discussion. The program combines fantasy with reality to present valuable information to the young viewer in imaginative and involving situations. Starring Lou Gossett, Jr. as Cosmo and popular young TV star Chad Allen as Ben, the story revolves around the 12-year old Ben and his desire to be accepted. Cosmo presents Ben with a series of trips through fantasy land which enable Ben to learn valuable lessons about drugs as well as coping skills, building self-esteem, and resisting peer pressure. "Merit rationale: 'STRAIGHT UP' was developed with extensive use of experts in the areas of education, medicine and drug abuse prevention who specialize with this age group. 'STRAIGHT UP' is unique for this age group, particularly, in that it shows the role of advertising in influencing young people in the use of gateway drugs. A comprehensive Teachers' Guide was also developed to enable teachers and community group leaders to maximize the effectiveness of the video program. A 'STRAIGHT UP' Comic Book has also been developed for use, with or without the video, by community groups. It is designed to encourage young people to talk about their concerns with parents, teachers, friends and relatives; to develop assertion communication and coping skills, decision-making skills and to establish values."--1988 Peabody Awards entry form.
