- Description
- Program Description
- "America's distinguished composer, Aaron Copland conducted the Matrix: Midland Festival Orchestra in the 1978 revival of his only opera. 'The Tender Land' was produced for the stage by the Michigan Opera Theatre. "Set in the Depression-era in a Midwest rural community, 'The Tender Land' is the story of a young girl who falls in love with a drifter on the eve of her graduation from high school. She is confronted with a vision of the world outside her narrow [existence]. There is a complication in their romance. She associates him with freedom and he associates her with settling down. The simple story is punctuated by Copland's expansive score that evokes the feeling of wide open spaces as no other composer's music. "The production was lit for television by Tony DiGirolamo of Imero Fiorentino Associates, Inc. The audio was provided by National Public Radio and the production was taped in stereo for broadcast by PBS via the DATE stereo system. The production was also carried by NPR."--1980 Peabody Awards entry form.
