- Series Description
- "In the shadow of the nation's largest public housing project, Lilla Green tries to teach science and is heartened by the results she gets using 'The New Explorers': 'I know something positive is happening,' she says. 'because they used to come back from a weekend talking about their friends who got shot. Now they want to know how much the sweet potato has grown.' "'The New Explorers' portrays scientists as Indiana Jones types, showing kids the adventure inherent in discovery. With the U.S. Department of Energy and Argonne National Laboratory, teachers are trained in the use of the videos and students meet scientists for lunch. Across the nation, teachers and students are joining the adventure, including a school in Somerville, N.J., which rebuilt its entire science program and laboratory based on the excitement of the television series. <p."'Farewell to soporific lectures on Madame Curie,' wrote Newsweek. Welcome to the Lilla Green's construction paper rain forest, where [12-year-old] Joshua Anderson came in early for a week to draw the jaguar and toucan, and where 5th-grader Malik Johnson makes sure the tape recorder is always on, playing the sounds of the tropics."-- 1992 Peabody Awards entry form.
