Description
Episode Description
" Straight Hate , an episode of KCET-TV's 'Life & Times' local public affairs series, focuses on the rising tide of anti-gay violence and what one local community is doing about it. Gay bashing, whether verbal or physical, is a national epidemic. From the halls of the 1992 Republican Convention, to the pulpits of uninformed churches, to the streets of small towns across America, gay men and women are openly assaulted in alarmingly growing numbers. " Straight Hateoffers some hope and solutions as illustrated by the city of Long Beach in Los Angeles County. In the program we see how the local gay community works with the police department on [an] anti-gay bashing sting operation. We also see how a volunteer citizen's group monitors the streets with foot patrols in the gay neighborhood. Finally we hear from victims themselves and how they are affected by acts of violence. We learn that they are unwilling to be victimized and instead have taken steps to curb the bashings. " Featured in the half hour program are two public service announcements produced by the Anti-Violence Campaign. Many local stations have refused to air these PSA's claiming that they are too graphic for the general audiences. For many viewers in the Southern California region, Straight Hatewas the only place to see the controversial spots. "By all means this program will not end the bigotry that results in gay bashings, but it does give viewers, and city officials, food-for-thought and some direction to channel efforts to make a difference in their own communities. Additionally, the gay and lesbian population is often portrayed by the media in stereotypical and sensational depictions. Straight Hatecounters this by presenting a sensitive and positive look at some of its members."-- 1992 Peabody Awards entry form The program includes a profile on Jack Castiglione of the Long Beach Police Department's Gay and Lesbian Advisory Group and his assistance in the operation of gay bashing stings and footage of training for the Long Island Teams Project with representative Jeff Ziegler, a community effort to monitor streets to prevent gay bashing.
