Description
Series Description
"FOUR QUEENS JAZZ NIGHT FROM LAS VEGAS (4QJNLV) is a weekly, hour long jazz performance series produced by KNPR and distributed to 98 public radio stations nationwide by American Public Radio. 4QJNLV is currently in its 6th year of national distribution. The program features accessible, mainstream jazz performed by leading and up-and-coming improvisers in an intimate setting. "FOUR QUEENS JAZZ NIGHT FROM LAS VEGAS appeals to the 'hard core' jazz aficionado, and also, because of the program's emphasis on accessibility, to the listener who might be discovering mainstream jazz. 4QJNLV not only entertains listener, it also serves to document performances of artists. Recently deceased jazz musicians such as Eddie 'Cleanhead' Vinson, Victor Feldman, Charlie Rouse, and Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis were all recorded by 4QJNLV very shortly before their deaths. Emerging young jazz musicians such as Matt Catingub and Ray Pizzi have received substantial national exposure through 4QJNLV broadcasts. 4QJNLV always strives for superior recording and production standards. The program's recording engineer/producer Brian Sanders lends a special sensitivity to program production because he is a seasoned jazz musician who understands the specific audio and aesthetic demands of jazz performance radio. Sanders works closely with the artists in selecting the material chosen for broadcast and in achieving optimal recordings. 4QJNLV is an anomaly in today's radio broadcasting environment: the program is live performance radio in an environment dominated by pre-recorded discs, and it's the effort of a small station (8 fulltime staff) in a radio distribution environment dominated by network, production house, and major market station produced [programming]."--1988 Peabody Awards entry form.
