- Description
- Episode Description
- 'Heroes and the Test of Time' tells the story of two very different men, Thomas Eakins, the painter and General George Armstrong Custer, and how and why their reputations have changed over time.--1985 Peabody Awards entry form.
- Series Description
- "SMITHSONIAN WORLD submits two illustrative hour programs from its ongoing series of public television specials co-produced by GWETA (Channel 26 in Washington, D.C.) and the Smithsonian Institution. The programs are titled 'Heroes and the Test of Time' and 'Where None Has Gone Before.' "We believe the series merits the consideration of the Peabody Awards because it is the only one on television at the present time that seeks to provide a general audience with an informative yet entertaining mix in each hour of significant and unusual stories in the arts, sciences and humanities. Its aim is to show the relationship between the disciplines, and the excitement of personal achievement in an increasingly compartmentalized, specialized world. The series also offers high production value in its efforts to take the audience beyond the walls of the world's largest museum complex to explain the stories behind the objects and world-wide activities of the Smithsonian. "In its first two seasons the series has achieved considerable critical and audience success, measured by consistently excellent ratings and peer recognition in a number of awards (Emmy, Ohio State, etc.).
