- Program Description
- "Broken marriages, wasted careers, the effects of Agent Orange: these and other scars of war are vividly recalled by 20 men and women who served in Southeast Asia. These Vietnam veterans are joined by host and veteran Charles Haid (of NBC's 'Hill Street Blues'). They describe what it was like to serve in America's most unpopular war, and what it was like to return home to frustrating, often difficult circumstances. Many have encountered problems readjusting to post-war life. A PROGRAM FOR VIETNAM VETERANS-- AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO SHOULD CARE offers help for veterans who have encountered similar obstacles. "Without use of Vietnam-era or other film footage, the program relies on the impact of each individual's story as it is told before an auditorium audience in Madison, Wisconsin, once a hotbed of anti-war sentiment. They communicate through song, cartoons, and the spoken word, with one common message to veterans everywhere: you're not alone. "WTTW received more than 700 phone calls and 700 letters from around the country in response to this program, overwhelmingly positive. A PROGRAM FOR VIETNAM VETERANS-- AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO SHOULD CARE makes veterans and veterans' families aware of other veterans' feelings, problems, and solutions."--1986 Peabody Awards entry form. This is part 2 of the PSA about the Vietnam War. Such topics include the perceptions of women in combat ('donut dollies'), being around civilians in Vietnam, unnecessary deaths and an early loss, alcohol and drug abuse of survivors, and the obstacles of gaining trust in America again and seeking help at the Vet Center. A musical performance at the end is included.
