- Episode Description
- "In Malaysia, the year 2002 seems right around the corner. The Malaysian government and its people have pledged to be completely 'developed' in less than thirty years. Few question whether it's a goal worth attaining, nor do they question Malaysia's ability to attain it. For the past twenty years, Malaysia has had steady annual economic growth of 5% or better, and poverty is down from 50% to 17%. Malaysia is truly one of Asia's economic success stories, an up-and-coming Minidragon. "Yet, what price does Malaysia pay for its meteoric rise and why the rush to succeed' "'Malaysia: A 2020 Vision' tells the stories of five people living through the country's transformation. These include: "Paul Low, a Chinese businessman, who, haunted by memories of race riots 30 years ago, struggles today to build partnerships between the new Malay and the long-established Chinese business communities. "Rohani, a devout Muslim woman, who also happens to be a labor leader fighting for the rights of women workers at one end of the largest computer chip factories in Malaysia, owned and operated by a U.S. [multi-national] corporation. "Through the lives of its people, the story of modern Malaysia unfolds, revealing a country full of optimism for its future, yet unsure where their 2020 vision is taking them."--1993 Peabody Awards entry form.
