Description
Program Description
"This special memorial program on the occasion of the death of Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt gathered together eight women who had been intimately associated with her over many years as personal friends, neighbors, and colleagues in her great and diverse work. "As moderator, Lee Graham guided the discussion, but conscientiously avoided intruding except when required for form and order. "The achieved object was to present intimate material, impressions, and evaluations of 'the world's most admired woman,' obtainable in no other way: through discussion among eight women --distinguished and obscure -- who knew her in many facets of her life. "What emerged is a living portrait of a true and whole woman: 'Eleanor Roosevelt -- A Woman's Woman.'"--1962 Peabody Awards entry form. The panelists were: Mrs. Aileen Harrity, a neighbor at both Hyde Park and Campobello; Hon. Anna M. Kross, Commissioner of Corrections, City of New York; Ireene Wicker, 'The Singing Lady' of radio, who with her husband Victor Hamer knew Mrs. Roosevelt for many years. Mr. Hamer and his brothers hold Campobello in trust for the people; Hon. Francis Perkins, for 12 years U.S. Secretary of Labor under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Former Industrial Commissioner of the State of New York. Now on the faculty of Cornell University; Miss Rose Schneiderman, President for many years of the New York Women's Trade Union League; Fanny Hurst, celebrated novelist; Mrs. David Gurevitch, wife of Mrs. Roosevelt's personal physician, neighbors in New York City, who accompanied her on many trips since 1958; Hon. Eleanor Clark French, New York City Commissioner to the United Nations.
