Program Description
"In this live, interactive special, New Jersey Network set out to make the mysteries of the law comprehensible to young children (grades 3-6), and in a lively, challenging and entertaining way. "The idea began with a statewide mock trial competition in which the kids wrote and acted out their own imagined cases. "We were at the state finals to catch them in action, and it was those mock trials -- taped and edited -- that were the basis, in-studio for panel discussion, in-house audience participation and call-in interaction. "Elementary school classrooms throughout New Jersey, by TV and phone, became part of this unique interactive format in which kids, in effect, were able to teach kids about an important part of institutional life that even few adults really understand. "From the roles of various courtroom players (lawyers, judges, plaintiffs, defendants) through the evaluation of the merits of a case (the young audience itself served as the jury), Kids' Court was educational TV in a non-pedantic, fun format -- educational TV the way it should be."--1996 Peabody Awards entry form.
