- Series Description
- "It's becoming harder and harder for smaller arts organizations that contribute to the cultural vibrancy of New York to survive today. In May 1995, many of those organizations found a new outlet for reaching potential funders and patrons, thanks to radio station WQXR. At that time, 96.3 FM WQXR introduced a dedicated initiative specifically designed to help arts organizations that do not have the means to publicize their activities and funding goals. "Through a two-pronged program consisting of a catalog and of on-air announcements, WQXR alerted its listeners to the needs of New York's smaller non-profit arts organizations and encouraged them to take 'Action for the Arts.' "The key component was a catalog that was released in July, 1995. It listed 96 arts organizations, along with a description of each one's goals, activities, specific needs and contact information. It was distributed to all listeners who responded to on-air announcements, and through participating organizations as well. "All small arts organizations that met the station's outlined criteria were invited to apply. The criteria and an application for consideration were included in a kit sent to all interested organizations. A drawing determined which qualifying organizations were included in the catalog. "The second major factor in the project was a campaign of announcements on 96.3 WQXR. Thirty-two organizations were selected to participate, and each sent a spokesperson to our studios to record a mission statement and a specific call to action. The spots were designed to educate listeners about the diverse activities of the arts organizations and to inspire their involvement and support. The 32 organizations were selected in a drawing at a launch party held at The Morgan Library in July, 1995. "Action for the Arts was approved and supported by Schuyler Chapin, Commissioner of the Dept. of Cultural Affairs, and Kitty Carlyle Hart, Chairman of the N.Y. State Council on the Arts. "This project was an enormous success. Thousands of enthusiastic listeners requested catalogs, there was a great outpouring of in-kind services donated, and these needy organizations got the exposure they needed. The ultimate compliment came when one participant said, 'You are to the arts what Greenpeace is to the whales.'"--1995 Peabody Awards entry form.
