Description
Segment Description
"This documentary is a portrait of Mubarak and his mother, Margy, and a memoir of how their family collapsed when Mubarak's father found out his son was not only a sissy and a bookworm, but also gay. It's an in-depth examination of contemporary events and issues that are widely discussed in American life. "Very few documentaries are as intimate as this one. Families break up every day, but rarely with the parents still in love, as Margy and her husband were. Even though every year more marriages end in divorce, it seems each one is still a shock. To paraphrase Tolstoy, families that stay happily together all do so in the same way, but the ones that collapse do so each according to their own devastatingly unique rules. "'Mubarak' was produced by This American Life, a national weekly radio series documenting everyday life in the United States. Each week the program's producers choose a theme and invite various writers and documentary producers to tackle that theme. It is the intent of the series to spawn a new generation of documentary producers and documentary production on public radio, and many innovative and unusual documentaries have been commissioned and broadcast by the show. 'Mubarak' was part of a show whose theme was 'Sissies,' first broadcast 12/13/96. "'This American Life is heard each week on 65 public radio stations around the country. 'Mubarak' was also broadcast, in its entirety, on the National Public Radio program Fresh Air, on 12/20/96."--1996 Peabody Awards entry form.
