Description
Program Description
"'DUI- A Case History: Kelly's Dead, Who's at Fault' is a 25-minute docudrama about the tragedy of teen-age drinking and driving. It is the story of Mark Daniels, who drinks at a party and then attempts to drive three friends home. They never make it. Mark crashes his vehicle into a utility pole, killing one passenger and injuring two others. "Mark is charged with vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol. "The video explores the social and emotional consequences that Mark, his family, friends, classmates, the victims, their families and others experience as a result of Mark's irresponsible behavior. Alternatives to drinking and driving also are discussed to help model more acceptable behavior. "The dramatization includes scenes from the party, accident, jail, funeral and courtroom. "Although the script is fictitious, it represents the real-life incidents that unfortunately are common. Mark Daniels made the decision to drink and drive, which forever changed his life, and the lives of others. "This video merits consideration for the Peabody Awards because it is being placed directly in the hands of those who need most to see it -- high school students. We are distributing the video, along with a teacher's guide also developed by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, to all Florida high schools. Other groups, such as Students Against Drunk Driving, have eagerly incorporated the material into their substance-abuse courses. The frank discussion of drunken driving and its consequences have made these materials attractive teaching tools."--1989 Peabody Awards entry form.
