"Each year during sweeps months local stations bait their ratings hooks with stories purporting to tell the real stories behind their favorite radio people. Viewers almost invariably pick up their remote controls and dejectedly zap to another station. "Except in Chicago when 'Radio Faces' was broadcast. This program let disc-jockeys and announcers from all kinds of stations in Chicago tell their stories. Some told them briefly, some over a longer period of time, but each of the people interviewed had a chance to explain themselves. That meant that viewers had a very rare opportunity to not only see, but perhaps understand their favorite Ayatollah of the Airwaves. "The program is more than mere idolatry, however. By showing how a number of stations work and how their d-j's and station staffers think about their work in Chicago's 'media consumers' were given a better sense of some of the product they are offered. Radio listeners also got an insight into some of the variety of programs available in Chicago. But most of all, listeners got a chance to understand some of the people who communicate with them every day."--1989 Peabody Awards entry form.
