Description
Program Description
"Johann Strauss composed DIE FLEDERMAUS as an operetta, and its lively music and plot inspired American ballet pioneer Ruth Page to choreograph the work as a ballet. Cast with international stars including Galina Panova and Valery Panov, DIE FLEDERMAUS was produced as a holiday television special. It is set in festive turn-of-the-century Vienna, a city dancing in waltz time at masked balls, full of romantic intrigues. "'Die Fledermaus' refers to the caped, capricious man about town whose practical jokes propel the plot. The leading roles are danced by the Panovs, former stars of Leningrad's Kirov Ballet, Richard Cragun, leading dancer of the Stuttgart Ballet, and Marianna Tcherkassky and Danilo Radojevic, principal dancers of the American Ballet Theatre. "Describing the ballet as 'just a bit naughty,' Page has created plenty of virtuosic solos and romantic pas de deux for the dancers that dazzle the audience. Taped before an audience in an historic theatre setting, DIE FLEDERMAUS preserves another of Ruth Page's works for the generations to come."--1986 Peabody Awards entry form.
