Description
Program Description
"Philadelphia Diary presents the humor, poetry and drama of everyday life in the City of Brotherly Love in a feature-length fictional film created by a local public television station. The script, conceived by nationally-known Philadelphia writers Bruce Graham, Michael Hollinger and Sonia Sanchez, was inspired by a series of radio interviews conducted with 50 Philadelphians in 1998 by the film's director. "Philadelphia Diary tells the story of Philadelphians living in three different neighborhoods. Set during the 24-hour period between dawn of July 3 and dawn of July 4, the film weaves the storylines together through the use of radio and television news reports and real-life preparations for the 'Welcome America!' celebration. Filmed in locations throughout the city during a four-week period, Philadelphia Diary depicts a city rich in history and as diverse as the people who live in its neighborhoods. The film's drama of everyday life serves as a microcosm for any place in the United States dealing with problems associated with diversity. "One of the film's storylines focuses on the conflict between a mural artist named Lucy and several teenagers who keep defacing the neighborhood mural she's creating. Though Lucy's battle with lupus threatens her ability to complete the mural, she is determined to finish, not realizing that she is painting over the teenagers? memorial to a friend who was lost to violence. In that same West Philadelphia neighborhood, Beverly Johnson, grandmother of one of the teenagers, bears a heavy heart. On this day she must travel by bus and subway to North Philadelphia, where her daughter, Ramona, is drowning in drugs and is unable to take care of her children. On the other side of the city, newlyweds Curt and Suze Kowalski have just moved into their South Philadelphia rowhome and are trying to get along with each other and their elderly next-door neighbor, Mickey, whose insistence on feeding neighborhood pigeons annoys subway driver Curt."--1999 Peabody Awards entry form.
