"For 21 years, WASHINGTON WEEK IN REVIEW has been committed to bringing objective news reporting to the American public. Ours is a program that presents news in an old fashioned way, devoid of flashy gimmicks or other embellishments. Moderator Paul Duke and his print reporter guests talk about the week's news from the capital in a simple straightforward fashion without editorializing. WASHINGTON WEEK panelists are chosen from a pool of the capital's finest reporters. Most have received the most coveted prizes in journalism; several are Pulitzer Prize winners. "WASHINGTON WEEK IN REVIEW itself has received numerous prizes throughout the years, including a Columbia-duPont and several local Emmys. It can be seen on almost every PBS station in the country and has gained one of the most loyal and devoted audiences in all of television. "Since the break of the Iran-Contra Affair in late 1986, WASHINGTON WEEK has provided detailed and accurate coverage of the commissions and hearings designed to uncover the scandal. Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Haynes Johnson covered the hearings and led our panel of regulars in enlightening discussion week after week. "We have selected four programs that highlight this coverage, starting with the February 27 show on the release of the Tower Commission report. Our reporters analyzed this stinging assessment of the Reagan Administration's handling of the Iran-Contra Affair and also discussed the resignation of Chief of Staff Donald Regan and the surprise appointment of Howard Baker to succeed him. "Coverage of the 'Ollie-Mania' that grabbed the nation's attention was handled with exacting flair by the WASHINGTON WEEK reporters on July 10. The majority of the program was devoted to details of Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North's testimony and its implications of his superiors up into the White House. "Our July 24 program examined Secy. Of State George Shultz's testimony as it refocused the hearings with questions about the constitutionality of an 'extra-legal' system out of control of the White House.
