- Description
- Series Description
- "Public TV for East Tennessee has produced and broadcast the 'Scholars' Bowl' series since 1983. Over the years the competition has grown in sophistication, participation, and audience acceptance. During 1995, 52 high schools from east Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, and North Carolina participated in the single-elimination academic competition. More than 4,500 students have participated in the project since its first year. "As a continuing project, 'Scholars' Bowl' represents a major effort to enhance the importance of academics. Public TV for East Tennessee developed the series to place the emphasis on academics, stressing the importance of education in the present, as well as into the future. [The] objective of the series is to create a mechanism that stresses and highlights the importance of academics in high schools in the Service Areas of WSJK-TV and WKOP-TV. "The success of the series in realizing these objectives has been acknowledged in both letters from all segments of the stations' viewing publics, and by the stations' receipt of two consecutive 'School Bell' awards. These prestigious Statewide awards are presented annually by the Tennessee Education Association 'in recognition of outstanding efforts to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in Tennessee.' Public TV for East Tennessee was recommended for the award by the Knox County Education Association. Success has been further recognized by the fact that a number of elementary and middle schools have also implemented 'Scholars' Bowl' competitions both within their schools, and within their regions in East Tennessee. "The series merits Peabody consideration because it represents a continuing, intensive, successful public service effort to place emphasis on education by publicly spotlighting academic achievement."--1995 Peabody Awards entry form.
