Description
Episode Description
"Jane Addams made a deep impression on Chicago and on social work throughout the country. Addams' work with the poor, through education, housing, and health care is fairly well known, but the young, upper-crust of women who worked with her have been forgotten. The House the Jane Built tells who those women were and the extraordinary effects of their work at Jane Addams' Hull House. "Using excerpts from Addams' writings, the program explores the difficulties and challenges of helping Chicago's fast-growing immigrant population cope with overcrowding, illiteracy, and unemployment. The [program] features a cast of local actresses who portray the fascinating women who worked with Addams."--1990 Peabody Awards entry form. Ellen Burstyn narrates The House That Jane Built. Cast members portray Jane Addams, Ellen Starr, Julia Lathrop, Mary Kenney, and Alice Hamilton. Cast members reenact how they met Jane Addams, life challenges they faced, work done at the Hull House, and accomplishments throughout their lives.
