Description
Program Description
"The cameras capture an uniquely poignant and memorable occasion, the appearance in the General assembly Hall at United Nations Headquarters of Pablo Casals (in his 95th year) and a body of world-famous musicians long associated with him: the violinists Isaac Stern and Alexander Schneider, the pianists Mieczyslaw Horszowski, Eugene Istomin and Rudolf Serkin. Casals conducts the world premiere of a hymn newly written by him (to words of W.H. Auden) and directs a concert of music by Bach and Stravinsky. U Thant awards Casals the peace medal. At the program's end, Casals plays the cello and talks of Catalonia and peace. "(The annals of music contain no phenomenon comparable to that of Casals, seen here conducting, playing and speaking in public a few weeks before his 95th birthday.)"-- 1971 Peabody Awards entry form.
