"Students across the country are dropping out of public high schools in record numbers. Nationwide, more than 25 percent of all students will not graduate. California, once a model for public education, has suffered one of the most dramatic increases in dropouts. 'Dropouts' a KCET JOURNAL Special Report portrays the problem of school dropouts through the eyes and experiences of those who are directly involved: students, teachers, counselors, school administrators, police, parents and social workers. "Set in the ethnically and socioeconomically diverse community of Venice, California the program paints a series of probing portraits to uncover the factors that lead students to give up on school. The program not only looks at Venice High but also at alternative programs that attempt to bring dropouts back and keep dropouts in school. In Venice High School's struggles and solutions we see a story that is repeated across the state and the nation."--1986 Peabody Awards entry form.
