- Series Description
- "Entering its 17th season, THE TERRITORY is the longest-running public television showcase of independent film and video in America. The series explores television as a new kind of gallery space, combining screenings, clips, commentary, and artists' interviews featuring the work of artists who redefine conventional ideas of film and video. The result: television's boundaries are expanded to the cutting edge with strong visual impact, impressive skill, and challenging content. "Most recently THE TERRITORY programs have broadcast the 'many visions' of a multicultural and international community of media artists, perpetually redefining the medium through new strategies and new technologies. THE TERRITORY consequently has developed a model format designed to enhance visual perception of the audience while actively disseminating the model to broaden the audience. The model is structured around two strategies: (1) curating innovative works that challenge the role of the viewer; and (2) providing commentary, with artists' interviews, to create a bridge between conventional television and media art. According to internationally well-known media artist Woody Vasulka, 'THE TERRITORY'S format allows a private/personal work to be transformed into a cultural activity.' "The program being submitted is entitled 'Surreal Animation.' Past and present animation artists reveal our on-going ambivalence about art and technology, and what it is to be human in a mechanistic universe."-- 1992 Peabody Awards entry form
