Program Description
"'The National Parent Quiz' represents year three in an on-going community outreach project by WMFE, which began in 1989 with 'Crackdown: The War on Drugs.' This one-hour television special shows parents how to prevent drug abuse through effective parenting. The program was produced by WMFE and distributed free to public television stations throughout the country. WMFE also provided extensive outreach and promotional support, allowing stations to extend the program's effectiveness b working with local community groups. 'The National Parent Quiz' aired on 237 public television stations in 47 states, and many stations also produced local live follow-up programs."--1991 Peabody Awards entry form. Participants in the quiz include Evelyn Fernandez, a mother; Rick Mellin, a father; Kyle Geisler a 14-years-old; Querida Thomas, a 13-year-old; Phillip Diaz, the assistant director for prevention in the National Office Drug Control Policy; Dr. Jane Nelsen, a a marriage, family and child therapist specializing in parent education; Jacqueline Christian, a mother; and actor Ben Vereen, a father. Also includes comments from celebrities including David Cassidy, Howie Mandel, Sandy Duncan, and Marcia Strassman. The quiz is staged in front of a live audience. Panelists react to a series of dramatized skits of situations that arise for parents and discuss the best way to be a supportive and responsible friend and parent to children. Charles Ogletree moderates. At the end of the videotape there are several public service announcements promoting the program.
