Program Description
"Return to Giant is a documentary about the 1955 location filming of Giant and the collision between small-town Texas and Hollywood. The documentary looks at the last days of the studio system and 'old' Hollywood, and the then-unusual practice of shooting a film on location, not on the back lots. For many people in Marta, it was their one moment in the limelight, never to return. It was also the last performance of James Dean, and the remembrances of him are at [odds] with the 'moody' and 'troubled' portrayal of him. Finally, the program looks at Giant's influence on pop culture, 40 years later. A true piece of [Americana']."--1996 Peabody Awards entry form.
