Description
Episode Description
"As he approached his last year conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Georg Solti knew he had to act on an insight he'd experienced during his early years on the podium. He had to perform Beethoven's Fifth Symphony as Beethoven wrote it. The popularity of the piece--it begins with 'the most famous four notes in music'--made his decision more difficult. Solti succeeded--as Solti's Beethoven shows. "Seeing him in rehearsal provides a rare glimpse into the workings of a major symphony. Seeing him introduce the musicians to a different way of playing the Fifth Symphony work provides an insight into his own mind--and Beethoven's as well. "WTTW has often worked with the world's greatest musicians giving the station's producers, directors and technicians the experience and knowledge needed to record their masterful performances. In Solti's Beethoven that experience helped them capture a historical concert as well as the thoughts and work behind it."--1990 Peabody Awards entry form.
