- Series Description
- "In collaboration with WNYC, N.Y. Public Radio, Symphony Space has produced 13 explosively entertaining hours of literary readings by distinguished actors. Celebrating the short story and its current comeback in American letters, SELECTED SHORTS offers 32 classic and contemporary works of short fiction, by writers including Philip Roth, Eudora Welty, Richard Ford, Anton Chekov, Zora Neale Hurston, John Cheever and Ann Beattie, read by William Hurt, Linda Hunt, Fritz Weaver, Ruby Dee, Tony Randall, Barbara Barrie et al. All readings were recorded before a live audience at Symphony Space in New York City. A complete schedule is enclosed. The series was initially broadcast by WNYC-FM starting 1/18/87 and was distributed via satellite to approximately 85 public stations, including those in Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Cleveland. Comments from station manager (enclosed) and hundreds of letters received from big cities, rural outposts and small towns where 'the end of the world will come before a cultural event' (excerpts also enclosed) attest to the excitement and gratitude with which SELECTED SHORTS has been received. We have sent out over 650 copies of the series reading list, and are negotiating to produce tapes in response to teacher requests. SELECTED SHORTS was part of 'The Year of the Reader 1987', designated by Congress to promote reading in America, and has also inspired at least a dozen spinoff projects involving the short story in schools, theatres, libraries, community centers and a medical center (the Mayo Clinic). The stories were chosen by Kay Cattarulla and Isaiah Sheffer (producer and director, respectively, of the project for Symphony Space) and by the writers Toni Morrison, Susan Sontag, Raymond Carver, Gordon Lish and Lore Segal. Produced for radio by Marjorie van Halteren; edited by Lauren Krenzel. Further information can be found in the enclosed press clippings and brochure."--1987 Peabody Awards entry form.
