"Jeff Smith, the Frugal Gourmet, and Itzhak Perlman, the world-famous violinist, share an appreciation for fine music and good food. Now for the first time, they meet to express their creativity in the kitchen for this special edition of the 'Frugal Gourmet' series. In addition to being a musician, Perlman is a serious cook. He regularly prepares meals for his family and friends, his culinary [repertoire] includes a wide variety of cooking styles, and he has studied Chinese cooking. "Although Smith and Perlman have been mutual fans for years, they have never met. The idea to put them together for a cooking show came from a WTTW producer, who knew Perlman and his reputation in the kitchen. Perlman was immediately enthusiastic about the idea as was Smith. Prior to the program's taping before a studio audience, the two men met only once to discuss the show's format. The result, remarkably, is an hour filled with wit, [camaraderie], and good food. "Smith is an outspoken advocate of the spiritual and social joys of gathering together to share and enjoy a good meal and during this special he and Perlman reminisce and talk about the meaning and ritual surrounding the food they are preparing.
