- Series Description
- "THE QUESTION OF EQUALITY, a [four-hour] series produced by Testing the Limits for the Independent Television Service, is the first ever television series to explore the rich and complex history of the gay and lesbian civil rights movement. Combining rare archival footage with revealing first-hand accounts, QofE features the dramatic personal stories, signature events, court battles, and ongoing debates within a diverse and vibrant community --- one that spans the spectrum of race, class, gender, age, religion, geography, and politics. With passion and insight, this series traces the triumphs and setbacks of millions of Americans in their pursuit of liberty and equal protection under the law. QofE sheds needed light on ourselves, our families, our neighbors, and our friends by illuminating our common need --- regardless of sexual orientation --- for respect, understanding, and equality. As executive producer David Meieran puts it, 'Family, friends, colleagues may be supportive of homosexuals they know, but wonder "why must you flaunt it, why must you have these civil rights demonstrations, these gay parades'" There's never been [the] knowledge transmitted [through] the mainstream media that would help them understand what the fuss is about, what's at stake in the movement for lesbian and gay equality.' The Question of Equality does just that. "'Sophisticated storytelling with a difference. [Well-researched], passionately articulated, dramatically structured, it's terrific television'The participants speak out vehemently, intelligently, and with the authority of experience.' (Village Voice) "'Smartly conceived and stylishly shot, with an incredibly effective score by Anton Sanko, the series succeeds at being good television and not just good activism.' (B. Ruby Rich) "'The Question of Equality stakes out ambitious ground: charting milestones in the gay and lesbian rights movement, highlighting the community's diversity and examining its future.' (LA Times)"--1995 Peabody Awards entry form.
