Description
Series Description
"New Jersey is without a state-wide commercial television station. It is served rather by network-affiliated and independent TV stations located in Philadelphia and New York. Since the markets for those out-of-state channels are not state-wide, the Philadelphia stations tend to cover only news in the southern portion of the state and the New York ones concentrate on northern New Jersey. The need for state-wide coverage of certain new events -- particularly election results -- caused New Jersey Public Television, which has four channels to serve the state of New Jersey, to produce 'Election '77,' a [four-and-one-half-hour] special devoted to election returns, with analysis by prominent representatives of both political parties. 'Election '77' provided results of 120 legislative districts, 44 freeholder contests in the 21 counties and 15 other races, including state and local ballot questions. "Because no state tally system exists, NJPTV staffers traveled more than 5,000 miles meeting with county clerks and party chairmen to determine and establish a method for obtaining results. On election night, the network used 47 stringers, 20 [telephone] operators, 20 computer operators and some 100 other station staffers. The computer at nearby Rider College was used to tabulate and display returns. Four remotes were set up -- at the headquarters of each of the two party candidates for governor and at locations where the candidates were to be earlier in the evening. The enclosed edited tape is representative of the effort that was aired from 8 p.m. until 12:30 a.m."--1977 Peabody Awards entry form. The hosts for this program are Dick Minton, Senator James Dugan, Assemblyman Tom Kean, Thomas O'Neil, Joseph Gonzalez, and Joseph LeFante. Throughout the program, these men make predictions about how the race will turn out (they mostly agree it will be very close). Reporters on the ground include Betty Adams (who interviews S. Howard Woodson) Loretta Brennan (who interviews Governor Byrne), and an unnamed man (who interviews Karen Bateman), Jeff Hall (who is at the Bateman Headquarters and interviews Leslie Shuffler). The 1977 race is between Democrat Governor Brendan Byrne and Republican Senator Raymond Bateman. The Senator loses the race to the incumbent.
