Program Description
"Over the past six years I have broadcast 439 different radio commentaries on Oregon public radio stations, 103 in 1988. A collection of these commentaries has just been published under the title 'On History's Coattails.' Seventeen of them were broadcast in 1988. An earlier collection 'A Different Accent' was awarded the George Washington Honor Medal for 1986 by the Freedom's Foundation at Valley Forge. "As an English journalist who has worked in many countries and now lives in the United States[,] I want to use my experience to bring a breadth of approach and understanding to affairs that helps break down barriers between people. "Combative and investigative journalism have an important role. But in our fragmenting society there is also the place for the journalism that builds, unites, encourages, and helps the individual to see where he or she relates to and can affect the course of events. "The response from people at all levels, including professionals in the field, has encouraged me to think that these regular commentaries, given with that intent, are a significant and perhaps unique service to the public and would qualify for your Peabody Award. I enclose a cassette with a sampling of commentaries from 1988, copies of the two books mentioned above, and a review which appeared in the 'Cincinnati Enquirer.'" -- 1988 Peabody Awards entry form.
