- "When the recent recession led many corporations to fail or consolidate, thousands of workers lost their jobs. With few employment alternatives, many of the newly-unemployed were forced to consider going into business for themselves. "Rather than merely report on this trend, public television's The Nightly Business Report (NBR) performed a public service by designating May as 'Starting A Business' month. Throughout the month, NBR devoted a large part of its airtime to basic facts that first-time entrepreneurs should know. This began with three video reports -- on starting a business 'from scratch', on buying a franchise and on purchasing an existing business. The remaining segments featured advice from NBR's resident team of personal finance commentators and some guest experts. These commentaries included: --Money's Eric Schurenberg on the importance of selecting the right location; --Newsweek's Hank Gilman on what to look for in a franchise; --Kevin McCormally of Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine with tax tips; --FORTUNE's Marshall Loeb with general advice for first-time entrepreneurs; --Bruce Blechman (author) on how to generate cash; --Jonathan Pond (author) on avoiding common financial pitfalls. "To make this series available for reference, NBR repackaged the various segments as a 25 minute video. (This is the version submitted).
