- Series Description
- "BRENAU NEWS FORUM is a news conference begun in November, 1986, and broadcast weekly on WBCX-FM, an 835 watt noncommercial and educational radio station licensed to Brenau [Women's] College, a liberal arts institution of almost 600 students. "Guests who have appeared on BRENAU NEWS FORUM include politicians of local, state, national and international stature. Guests also run the gamut from drug users to battered wives, to international critics of some United States foreign policies, and to the CEO of the Georgia Power Company concerning its controversial new nuclear power plant and proposed rate increases. "Although BRENAU NEWS FORUM is not the only program of its kind, we believe it to be the only one in the South excluding, perhaps, some few large-market radio and television stations. On several programs the normal format, questions and answers, was changed to provide for debates by those opposing and supporting such issues as tort reform and educational policies in the state. "Most programs are broadcast two times - covering eight counties in northeast Georgia - and all programs are distributed to several area radio stations, including one in Atlanta, for broadcast. Reporters for almost all local and area media listen to, and prepare stories about, the issues broadcast. Those responsible for the program are not students and receive no compensation, but students are encouraged to attend the taping sessions and participate in follow-up question-and-answer sessions. Journalism students are encouraged to participate as assistants in all phases of the program. "The stature of the program is such that area print and broadcast journalists seek opportunities to be on the panel of questioners, and public figures, depending on their causes, are either eager or reluctant to appear. WBCX-FM knows of no other small radio station, college or community, which tackles such an undertaking as the BRENAU NEWS FORUM. "Program tapes and a book of supporting materials accompany this entry."--1987 Peabody Awards entry form.
