Program Description
"Israel, A Nation Is Born is a five part documentary series narrated by Abba Eban, which chronicles his recollection of, and his part in, the creation of the State of Israel. The series tells the story of the events leading to the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948; the subsequent conflicts, including the 1967 Six Day War and the 1973 Yom Kippur War; the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty; and the events of the last decade. Abba Eban has been a major participant in the story, so this program incorporates his personal testimony. The series draws on archive film and interviews with many of the key participants in the events in Israel. "Abba Eban was involved in the creation of the State of Israel and in 1948 was appointed Israel's representative to the United Nations. In 1950 he became Ambassador to the United States, and was elected a Labor member to the Knesset in 1959. In 1960 ambassador Eban became Israel's Minister of Education and Culture; In 1963 Deputy Prime Minister; From 1966-1974 Foreign Minister."-- 1992 Peabody Awards entry form.
