- Description
- Program Description
- "'New Orleans in the 60s' focuses on a pivotal decade of the 20th century and how the city of New Orleans responded to the social, political and cultural changes it was forced to confront. Continuing WYES-TV's commitment to documentaries focusing on the region's contemporary history, 'New Orleans in the 60s' details, through interviews and rare film footage, some of the monumental events of the decade, including political storms (surrounding integration and a proposed Riverfront Expressway that would have engulfed the city's historic French Quarter), and storms forged by nature (Hurricanes Betsy and Camille and the rare snowfall of 1963). The hour-long program includes a look at the social changes of the decade, including the emergence of the hippie movement and the city's tourism industry and the tremendous growth of the suburbs in the early 1960s. The program also takes a look back at beloved local television programs and the early rhythm and blues music scene, along with the birth of the New Orleans Saints football team and the Louisiana Superdome. "'New Orleans in the 60s,' by chronicling the events of a monumental decade in the city's history, reminds the community that we must not forget about the pressing issues of that decade, which ultimately shape the present."--1995 Peabody Awards entry form.
