Description
Episode Description
Mel Wax anchors the program. The reporters are all gathered together in the newsroom. As they read their reports, still photographs and footage clips are shown. Chester Hancock and Trevor Thomas report on the Battle of People's Park in Berkeley. Includes extensive footage of students and police and of speeches by faculty member and poet Denise Levertov, Episcopal priest Dick York, and student body president Dan Siegel. The first in-studio guest is Harvard biologist Dr. George Wald. Dr. Wald talks about the events at Berkeley and more broadly about the conflict between the younger and older generations, and about the military industrial complex. Next, reporter Ed Radenzell reports on the resignation of Supreme Court justice Abe Fortas. Tom DeVries reports on a meeting between Dolores Huerta and other activists representing the United Farm Workers and Safeway Supermarket officials regarding Safeway's decision to sell California table grapes that were not picked by union members. The next studio guest is Sen. Vance Hartke of Indiana, who discusses legislation that he has proposed to create a cabinet-level Department of Peace. Vance suggests such a department could work toward domestic peace between the generations as well as international peace, such as ending the war in Viet Nam. George Dusheck reports on a hearing regarding a Utah mining company's application to quarry basalt from Apperson Ridge in Alameda County. Bill [DeRay] reports on a possible rapid transit line in the Golden Gate Bridge District. Finally, Bob Bastian shows and discusses his political cartoons.
