Program Description
"Narrated by Edward Asner, PASSOVER is a half-hour documentary film on the Jewish holiday, celebrated each spring by Jews in remembrance of the Exodus, led by Moses, from Egypt into Israel more than 3,000 years ago. In addition to giving information about the history of Passover and offering details of the celebration, the program shows Passover to be real and ongoing, a key to Jewish history through generations of tragedy and persecution. An American [Seder], the home service centered around a special meal, is the program's focal point. Sequences shot on location in Israel, as well as Israeli [Seders], are intended to illustrate the universality of the practice of Passover among Jews everywhere."--1981 Peabody Awards entry form. The documentary, while explaining the parts of the seder and prayers, also goes into detail of Jews seeking freedom in history, indicating how the seder is emblematic of Jewish perseverance. The holiday shines a light on Jewish history and achievement much like other holidays. Also featured are a variety of cultures practicing their unique take on Passover including Yemenites, Ethiopians, and Russians.
