Description
Program Description
"More than one million American teenagers get pregnant each year. 600,000 of them have babies; nearly all of them are unprepared for motherhood biologically, psychologically or financially. Few Americans are aware that the United States has the highest teenage birth rate in the industrialized world. "GUESS WHO'S PREGNANT? goes beyond the statistics to examine why teenage pregnancy has become a major social problem and what is being done about it by parents, educators, religious leaders and various social and governmental agencies. Juxtaposing the opinions of the experts with a look at the lives of two unwed teenage mothers, the documentary focuses on the consequences of childbearing at such an early age regardless of 'legitimacy.' The program also reviews a number of current TV commercials and popular teen songs to discover how advertisements, heavily laced with sexual innuendo, transmit confused models and values to young people. "Finally, GUESS WHO'S PREGNANT? investigates several possible solutions to the teenage pregnancy problem ranging from sex education in the schools to contraceptive advertisements on television. "Public Service Followup: AUNT MARTHA AND THE B.S. LOVE COUNSELOR is WTTW's public service [follow-up] to GUESS WHO'S PREGNANT? While the hour documentary was aimed at a general audience, AUNT MARTHA (seen only in Chicago) was especially designed for teens. From the style of the host -- a rock and roll disc jockey -- to the use of phone-ins to involve the audience, and an upfront attitude that said there are no silly questions, the show was constructed to get information and help out to the community. (See supportive materials and AUNT MARTHA composite tape for additional information)."--1977 Peabody Awards entry form.
