"OPEN HEART SURGERY - THE CORONARY ARTERY BYPASS is a 1/2 hour documentary look at one treatment for heart disease. Hosted by David Ogden Stiers, an actor who portrays the surgeon Winchester on M*A*S*H, the program is intended for general audiences. An actual bypass operation is shown in graphic detail, and its purpose is explained in simple terms.'"--1979 Peabody Awards entry form. The host discusses the causes and effects of heart disease, and the program details one treatment: the coronary artery bypass. With the help of diagrams, the host describes how the heart functions when it's healthy and how the bypass surgery allows the heart to function normally again. Footage of an actual bypass surgery is shown, and the host narrates each step of the surgery, with close-ups of the heart, the surgeons working, and the equipment used. After the surgery, the host talks about some of the controversies surrounding coronary artery bypass surgery as a treatment for heart disease.
